Hatchbacks that Go Farther

2016 Hyundai Elantra GT

If the price of a gallon of gasoline ever made it back down to the price it was in the 1970s or even the early ‘80s we might never worry about fuel mileage again, but because that price continues to be as much or more than a gallon of milk, one of the most common questions dealers get for vehicles is “What is the gas mileage?”  Gas mileage is measures under ideal driving and vehicle conditions; which mean you need to maintain your new car, truck, or SUV properly and drive at least somewhat conservatively in order to benefit from decent gas mileage.

Along with the need for greater gas mileage we have seen an increase in the number of hatchbacks sold in America in the past few years.  Their versatility, small size, and generally good gas mileage have made hatchbacks one of the favorite styles of vehicle for many to purchase.  Here are the hatchbacks that get the best gas mileage for 2016.

Audi S7

This is a sneaker submission to this particular list.  Technically this is a hatchback with the sloping rear door hatch and it’s amazing that it makes it on the list with a 17 city/27 hwy mpg.  If you want a luxury hatchback that has both power and fuel mileage this is the place to go as it benefits from a 450 horsepower 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine.  This surprising entry will certainly turn heads, but might just barely make the cut for the fuel efficiency you are looking for from your favorite hatchback.

Nissan 370Z

The 370Z is another interesting entry onto the list and comes in with an 18 city/26 hwy mpg.  Even though the fuel mileage may not be as high as you would like, the joy of driving a great looking sports car that is built to be a hatchback may be just what you need.  This beauty is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine that puts out 332 horsepower and makes the ninth place on our list.  You can have a lot of fun in this car, and it’s certainly good to know you can keep on driving when other sports cars have stopped.

Audi TT

Another very sporty entry into what typically is a fairly boring list is the Audi TT.  This luxury laden sports phenom will certainly give you some driving pleasures from the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that offers up 220 horsepower.  The fuel mileage for this beauty comes in at 22 city/31 hwy mpg and starts out our list of those over the 30 mpg mark for the highway.  As a beautiful two-door coupe, the TT does have a hatchback rear, allowing it to be added to the mix.

Hyundai Elantra GT

Starting off the typical looking hatchbacks is the Elantra GT.  This small and sporty hatch has a great design that is borrowed from its brethren at Hyundai to offer a bit more sex appeal than most hatchbacks would allow.  The Elantra GT is powered by a 173 horsepower 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that brings you 24 city/33 hwy mpg to enjoy.  Driving around in this fun little car can be a pleasure as Hyundai makes it a point to fill its vehicles with some awesome features for every driver to enjoy.

Audi A7

When you take away the sportiness of the S7, you have the base model of the A7.  The A7 is certainly no slouch of a car with a spacious and luxurious interior to be enjoyed from Audi.  This car offers some excellent fuel mileage from the 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 engine that brings in 240 horsepower.  With this diesel engine in charge of things, the A7 gives you a wonderful fuel number at 25 city/38 hwy mpg to make this a fantastic choice when you want luxury and fuel mileage put together in one car.

MINI Countryman

Mini vehicles have become more popular than ever.  They have a throwback style and size that makes them fun and functional form many to enjoy.  The Countryman not only is a great four door vehicle that allows a diverse amount of cargo to be carried, but also is one that has some great fuel mileage to be enjoyed.  The 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine puts out 121 horsepower but brings in a fuel mileage of 27 city/34 hwy mpg for the enjoyment and pleasure of anyone who finds this to be their favorite hatchback for 2016.

Ford Fiesta

With an attractive style and a versatile cargo configuration, the Ford Fiesta is one of the best cars for grads or young professionals to enjoy.  At a price that is easy to live with this car also offers 28 city/36 hwy mpg to be really easy on the wallet when it comes to gas costs.  The Fiesta in the hatchback form is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder 120 horsepower engine.  This may not sound like much, but this is actually a peppy little car that can be a lot of fun to drive.

MINI Hardtop 4 Door

As the second entry from Mini in this list, the Hardtop 4 Door is a great choice when you don’t want the superior size of the Countryman.  Not only that, this is the first on our list to reach the 40 mpg mark, making it a fuel efficiency leader to be reckoned with.  The Hardtop 4 Door is powered by a 134 horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that gives you 29 city/40 hwy mpg to enjoy.  Even the city mpg number is higher than some of the hwy numbers from the bottom performers on this list, making this a fantastic choice for style, function and fuel mileage.

MINI Hardtop 2 Door

As the Mini’s released early, it may be that the benefit is being first to be released to get a jump on the rest of the year.  This even smaller Mini (the Minis keep getting Mini-er) is powered by the same engine and has the same fuel numbers as the 4 door.  This gives you the opportunity to choose how you want your Mini, in two or four-door style.  Either way, you a making a great choice if you choose to buy the Mini vehicles as they have awesome looks, great performance, and a laid back kind of vibe.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV

The i-MiEV is a weird looking car which nearly appears to be too large for its wheels and too small for any road.  Powered by a 66 horsepower electric motor, the i-MiEV is all electric and should only be bought if you plan to stay in the city.  As a new push toward electric powertrains, this car is interesting to discuss and gives us a 126 city/99 hwy MPGe to be enjoyed and appreciated, but unfortunately does limit you as the owner to where you can go.  This does make a great choice for second car that is limited to commutes and running errands, and might be perfect sitting in the driveway next to your weekend cruiser.

As the year progresses, we may see many more hatchbacks break into this list as they are close to making their way to dealer lots.  Even so, this list has a great variety for you to choose from and some excellent fuel mileages.  From luxury to sport to the typical hatchback you can see how much fun you can have with some great fuel mileage and even with a couple of the entries, some awesome power as well.
