Rolls-Royce clients have long enjoyed the privilege of ordering truly one-of-one cars, but now a compact British icon is getting in on the act. MINI has quietly finished work on a hand-built John Cooper Works Convertible called MINI.01, commissioned by a passionate American enthusiast who wanted something no one else would ever drive.

A Bespoke Build From Plant Oxford
This John Cooper Works Convertible isn’t an aftermarket special. It was built by MINI for one of its biggest US enthusiasts, with the owner working closely with the design and production teams to create something special. The car was hand-built at Plant Oxford for a longtime MINI fan in the US, and it’s currently making its way over on a ship, not yet delivered.
The unique model features over 50 exclusive details and a special two-tone paint job, marking the brand’s first full bespoke project and bringing MINI’s personalization efforts to a level previously associated with Rolls-Royce.
An NFL-Inspired Paint Job With a Diagonal Twist
The exterior is the headline act. The body splits midnight black and metallic green along a diagonal, with colors mirror-inverted left to right, hand-sprayed and clear-coated at Plant Oxford. The asymmetrical design places the black elements on the driver-side front and rear fenders, as well as the passenger-side door.
The two-tone livery with asymmetric blocking is meant to represent the owner’s favorite U.S. football team, and given the choice of colors, the car is presumably themed after the New York Jets or Philadelphia Eagles. Other exterior details push the one-off feel further. Accents include mirror caps with black-and-white stripes, a soft roof with a Union Jack pattern, 18-inch JCW Rallye Spoke wheels in dark gray with metallic accents, and JCW front and side winglets.
Over 50 Hand-Fitted Interior Details
Open the door and the same green theme takes over. The green runs through more than 50 individually specified details inside, including stitching, painted belt covers, custom-accented bands, a metallic green-trimmed Harman Kardon speaker surround, bespoke door armrest overlays, a personalized floor mat, and custom instrument cluster identifiers. Every one of those elements was prototyped and installed by hand at Plant Oxford, not sourced from a catalogue. The whole thing was built into the car from the start.
Tying it all together is a “MINI.01” badging system on the steering wheel, on interior labels, and scattered across the cabin in a few other spots, a simple way of noting what’s already obvious, that there’s just one of these. Illuminated sills also highlight the exclusivity.
Standard JCW Muscle Under the Skin
Mechanically, nothing has changed. The 2026 John Cooper Works Convertible comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 228 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. MINI says the roofless model hits 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 152 miles per hour.
Pricing for MINI.01 wasn’t announced, and the buyer wasn’t named. For context, the John Cooper Works Convertible starts at $44,600 plus a $1,175 destination fee. Adding the fully featured Iconic Trim costs $4,400, and the Union Jack roof adds $600, so a well-optioned JCW Convertible would run about $50,775. Given the hand work involved in this build, the actual MINI.01 almost certainly pushed well past that figure.
What MINI.01 Signals for Future Buyers
MINI says it’s expanding its special editions and factory customization options going forward. This car is probably the furthest that direction has gone yet, but if Plant Oxford can hand-build 50-plus bespoke interior details for one customer, it’s hard to argue they’re not serious about it. For MINI fans who’ve always wanted to order something truly their own, MINI.01 looks like a glimpse of what the brand could build next, if you ask nicely and bring the budget.
