While the Porsche 911 has been the stalwart of the brand for many years the fact is there are many sports cars that are much more powerful and dynamically designed by many of the other names in the world of supercars. Porsche has always held a special place in our hearts, but our minds tell us the power we want to enjoy is really in the Ferrari name or the Lamborghini models. Does this mean Porsche is yesterday’s news and it’s time for us to embrace the fact it no longer has a place in the automotive world?

In order to be competitive in the market of super cars Porsche is working on a mid-engined car that will be able to take on the Ferrari 488 and may even be much better than this Italian. This new Porsche, called the 960, is supposed to make its way to the market around 2019, sometime after the next generation of the 911 shows up for us to enjoy. This car will offer more power than we have ever seen from Porsche and be a car that we can seriously consider as an alternative to the Ferrari.
Even though Porsche loves their flat plane six-cylinder engines, early reports and patent filings suggest a 3.9-liter eight-cylinder quad turbo boxer engine is what will find its way in the engine bay of this car. This engine is expected to put out as much as 650 horsepower and be the right choice to give us the power and performance we want. Until now the only time Porsche has made a car with this much power for the streets has been the 918 and that car used a hybrid powertrain. With this new setup it’s easy to see that Porsche is taking the challenge of making a car to take on the Italians seriously.
Not only with the 960 be a powerful machine, but it will make use of the new modular sports car platform from the Volkswagen Group. This platform will become extremely familiar to us very quickly as it will also be used in the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan. This suggests the 960 will have AWD in place to make an even better overall ride. With the target weight of the 960 at 3,000 pounds which means there may be some items left out in order to keep the weight where it should be, but you can bet the 960 will be the supercar you want to drive once it arrives in the market in just a few short years.
