We are now in the seventh generation of the Corvette, signified by the C7 that we add to nearly every conversation, and the trim level that’s sold the most in the past isn’t one you might be familiar with right away. The Corvette has been the car most Americans have dreamed of buying and owning all their lives. In other countries the dream is to buy an exotic supercar, but there are so many to choose from its difficult to decide. In the United States, all that dreaming has gone into one car, the Corvette and the sales have shown for this longstanding sports car.
The Corvette is a car that doesn’t suffer the boom and then bust way most sports cars operate, but one trim level is being credited with keeping the Bowling Green plant running full tilt, the Grand Sport. This version of the Corvette was the highest volume model during the C6 generation and is poised to be part of the C7 lineup in the near future.
The addition of a new model to the lineup after a couple years has been genius for the Corvette in the past as we get ready to see the new Grand Sport version that will be added. This a car that will have the Stingray drivetrain with the 6.2-liter V8 LT1 engine and the dual mode exhaust system while adding the dry sump from the Z51 model. This will give the car 460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque to make it an exciting model to witness while remaining at a price that feels affordable for the blue collar shopper who’s ready for their Corvette. This car will have either the seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission included and offer the driving feeling we want from our sports car.
As for the size, the Grand Sport will be 3.5 inches wider than the standard model, but it feels much larger. This car will share the same body panels and suspension set up as the Z06 while driving on high performance tires that come from the Z07 package. For stopping power there are huge carbon ceramic brake rotors and an aero package that helps to give the car more or less drag depending upon the situations called for.
While the Grand Sport has been around for a long time, in other forms it either was more than expected or not quite enough. As a blend of all the other trims to create a fresh feel this new version of the Grand Sport will be a top selling car in the C7 generation while offering us everything we want to be able to enjoy on the road and on the track.
