Racing for the Attention of Today’s Generation

11.14.16 - Pirelli World Challenge

There’s no doubt that attention spans have waned with the immediacy of the generation we have in our youth of today. Many want their information right now and can process it much faster and in larger quantities than was the case with older generations. In an era where everything we do is shared right now and you have to know what your friends are doing all the time, sports that we watch need to follow a similar format, or at least give us that same sense of urgency so that we can feel like the action is always immediate.

Many racing series offer long races and great distances, which is fine and there are tons of fans that love to watch these races and enjoy the fact that it takes a lot of planning and strategy to win a race like this. While that style if racing is great, there is a type of racing that gives us the quick charge of only an hour of action to ensure we have the dose of action we want, but in a short period of time. With this racing series we see that every single decision has an immediate action involved and the drivers need to be quick and ready otherwise they’ll be left behind.

The racing series that offers this style of driving is the Pirelli World Challenge series and it’s a huge benefit to those who love to see GT cars battle it out even if for only a short time. The immediacy to improve your position when racing for such a short time is incredible and causes many drivers to have to take advantage of every opportunity because another one might not present itself. The risk is greater with this racing series because of this, but the drivers accept it and the action is amazingly fun to watch.

Not only are these races fun for us to watch and a blast for the drivers to compete in, with the short timeframe of racing, there are typically two races each weekend for a driver to enjoy. This allows the competitors to make adjustments after the first race to hopefully have a greater chance of victory in the second race of the weekend where they can drive toward their goal of flying the checkered flag after the race. This also gives fans two doses of these fast paced, all out, no guts no glory style of races.

The challenge for these races begins in qualifying where it’s extremely important to run great times otherwise you could be in the back of the pack with a great car and no way to get to the front. This makes the urgency of performance greater than in any of the races that take much longer and is one of the best adrenaline and stress increasing activities any racer can enjoy. If you’re looking for a great race to watch or to compete in, the PWC is certainly a lot of fun and the racing is only for a short time each time you hit the track.
