Jeep Wranglers are one of the most beloved vehicles of multiple generations: alongside the Ford F-150 and the Volkswagon Beetle, they’ve found a place in the hearts and garages of drivers everywhere. That makes it even worse that diesel-powered Wranglers may not exist at your local Jeep dealer after 2023. Stellantis is rolling out a limited production model of Jeep Wrangler that has a diesel engine, and all signs point to it being the last Wrangler to have a diesel engine.
The Shift Toward Zero-Emission, Fully Electric Vehicles
In the past few years, the automotive industry’s shift toward full electrification and zero-emission vehicles has led to stellar technological advancements and carbon footprint-conscious drivers. But while electric cars have moved forward, some older auto industry trends have been left behind.
Diesel engines have survived this long primarily due to their reliability and well-established following. Good diesel vehicles are supposed to last you a lifetime and have done so for many. In addition, the Ram 1500 truck using the EcoDiesel engine has one of the best fuel economies in its current lineup.
Unfortunately, that didn’t save diesel engines from finally leaving lots. It was recently confirmed that the EcoDiesel Ram 1500 stopped production, and the move toward a limited production diesel Jeep Wrangler recently has led us to believe the same is about to happen to Jeep.
Farout -The Last Jeep Wrangler with a Diesel Engine?
Inside sources say Stellantis recently emailed Jeep dealers about a limited production of the Farout—a Wrangler Rubicon with a diesel engine that’s only been in production for the last three years. A few things make the Farout stand out from the regular Rubicon models; red accents, Gladiator wheels, and an intriguing badge denoting the Farout as a vehicle using the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine.
While this could be just a new model rollout, the way that diesel vehicles have been on the decline, combined with the announcement about Ram 1500 EcoDiesel truck production, can easily lead us to believe that this is one last hurrah for the EcoDiesel engine before Stellantis stops manufacturing it altogether.
As the announcement has just been made, there’s little information on how many Farouts there will be and where they can be found. As Stellantis moves forward with this plan, more concrete numbers will be available.
The Future of Diesel
It’s hard to say if this is the beginning of the end for diesel engines—after all, vintage and used cars are frequently bouncing back. But as beloved diesel models become scarce on Jeep dealer lots, it feels like the end of an era.
