Another Car We Want to Drive

03.29.17 - BMW Alpina B5 Biturbo

Whether we need to relax the regulations that are in place for the automotive industry or automakers need to make sure every car they make can be offered in the US, something needs to be done. There are too many great cars on the market today that never get to be sold or driven in the US for the reasons of power, pollution and adherence to the safety standards that our regulatory bodies seem to think are necessary. We miss out on so many great cars it almost seems unfair for the country that has so much space and room to drive to not have the absolute best driving cars in the world.

Maybe I’m whining a bit, but when I see a car that certainly appears to be ready to give us the ride we want on the track or on the road but it won’t be sold here it makes me a bit upset. One example of such a car is the 2017 Alpina B5 Biturbo that’s built off the all new BMW 5 Series. This new variation of the 5 Series is certainly one that you’ll want to drive as well once you hear what this car has to offer (or get a glimpse of it in this short video).

Under the hood of the Alpina is a 4.4-liter V8 engine that can produces 608 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. This car is said to be faster than the new BMW M550i and offers up a time to reach sixty mph of less than four seconds. This car is actually quicker than the current M5 and makes me want to drive one right now so that I can experience the awesome ride of this car, but sadly it will never be offered in the US because of the limited numbers it will be built in.

The top speed of the Alpina B5 Biturbo is 205 mph and it comes standard with the xDrive AWD system in the first time in the history of this car. This car rides on 20-inch Alpina Classic wheels that come sold with Pirelli P Zero tires that have been specifically designed for this car. The transmission uses is an n eight-speed automatic that has been improved to use Connected Shift which is a system that uses GPS data to anticipate the need for a shift change on the road. This car even has electronically adjustable dampers to give you the best ride possible.

If that’s not enough to make you want to see this car on the roads in the US, there is a wagon version that could be great for a family that wants sporty wagon to drive. This wagon has a top speed of 202 mph, which may give you a crazy Clark Griswold style thought when you consider the vision of a wagon travelling that fast. Unfortunately, this is a car we’ll have to enjoy from afar as it won’t be offered in the US anytime soon, even though we would quickly gobble up this car and have a great time on the roads.
