Special Edition Models that Aren’t Special

05.31.17 - Lamborghini Aventador Miura Homage

There are times when the special edition model of a vehicle is exciting and makes us want to spend the extra money to be one of the few people who own one. These models are usually built as some form of celebration for the brand and for the model they’re attached to which makes them even more fun to buy. Unfortunately, there are some that leave us scratching our heads wondering what the designers were thinking and also asking who should be fired over such an obviously awful choice. Here are some of those special editions for your amusement:

Jeep Wrangler Dragon Edition – The only thing special about this vehicle was the dragon that showed up in a variety of locations on the Wrangler. The customers in China seemed to love it and the concept was shown at the Beijing International Automotive Exposition, but this vehicle made no sense in the US and wasn’t special to us at all.

Toyota Prius cPersona Series – This hybrid has been admired for several years and Toyota felt it needed a special edition so they painted it black and allowed for two accent colors to be chosen. These colors were Cherry Pearl and Electric Lime. You have more choices with the regular models; thankfully this car was limited to only 1,500 units.

BMW i3 Carbonight- This is a car that was only sold in Japan and it was meant to celebrate the 100th birthday of BMW. All this car gave those who bought it was a special numbered plate inside the car because every item in the car could be bought for the i3 with the range extender under the hood and this didn’t justify the premium price asked for.

Hyundai Tucson The Walking Dead Special Edition – This model only gave you a color change with an Ash Black exterior and subtle red accent graphics along with special edition badges. There is a little capability added with roof rack cross rails and the custom floor and cargo mats but compared to what Hyundai made for the actual show, this is a disappointing special edition.

Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition – While you can’t expect your Camaro to transform into Bumblebee, this was one that disappointed in a big way. This car only gave you badging all over it that showed the Autobot shields and that’s it. There was little to no effort with this special edition, but you still had to pay a premium price for it.

Smart ForJeremy Limited Edition – Who thinks it’s a good idea to put wings on a Smart Fortwo? Apparently that was Jeremy Scott and he thought it would sell to “cool” people all over the world. I don’t think there’s too many people wanting to be in Jeremey’s cool club if this is the price of admission; myself included.

Lamborghini Aventador Miura Homage – There wasn’t much done to make this an impressive model, but the fifty units it was limited to certainly sold out quickly. The only way you know this is the Miura Homage car is with the two-toned paint, the special wheels and the badges and plate on the car.

Fiat 500 Barbie Edition – Bathed in pink paint with Barbie emblems on many of the surfaces this is a car that showed up in 2009 and was a one off special edition that could be bought. I don’t know how many of these cars were purchased or how many people were willing to ride along with the owners, but that would make for interesting information.

Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder – The purpose of this car; to allow those waiting to take delivery of their 918 a Porsche they could drive with the same numbers on it. There wasn’t anything special and it was only offered to these 918 customers as a placeholder until their super expensive ultra-car was ready I wonder how many of the 918 owners actually bought this model.

Toyota Corolla Altis ESport Nurburgring Edition – This was a car that was doomed from the start. First of all you can’t put Corolla and Nurburgring in the same name. Secondly, this car was built to celebrate the seventh-place finish at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 2014. Doomed from the start this wasn’t a car worth your time.
