Nissan Skyline Rumored To Be Electric SUV

Nissan Skyline Rumored To Be Electric SUV

Although it likely wouldn’t be for sale at your Nissan dealer until 2025, the Nissan Skyline is rumored to be an electric SUV. If it proceeds past the rumor stage, the Nissan Skyline will be yet another vehicle in a long list of nostalgic badges being repurposed by automakers. The original Nissan Skyline was a pretty classic car with a long history that started in 1957.

All-New Nissan Skyline

It shouldn’t be a surprise that a new Nissan Skyline is likely to be an electric SUV. EV models are all the rage right now, and SUVs and crossovers have been taking over the market for some years now with many family cars and sedans being phased out. The all-new Skyline model isn’t actually quite as all-new as it sounds. It’s likely to be based on the Nissan Ariya.

Originally, Nissan did have some plans to release a next-generation sedan between 2016 and 2022. However, those plans fell through as Nissan turned toward the popular EV crossover style. Some enthusiasts aren’t fond of the Skyline badge being used on a crossover, but actually, it’s been done before. In mid-2009, Nissan launched the Nissan Skyline Crossover, which eventually became the QX50.

What We Know

According to reports, the Skyline will be for sale in North America and might be a bit more powerful than the highest-range Ariya. The latter puts out 389 horsepower, but the Skyline might have over 400 with a pair of electric motors. The reports are all mostly rumors right now. Nothing official has come out from Nissan on the Skyline.

In related news, Toyota may also be looking at using an old badge by coming out with a Century SUV. The Century rumor is similar to the Skyline one. Toyota would be revamping a badge from the days of sedan superiority and turning it into a very expensive SUV. Rumors say that this SUV will cost more than the Land Cruiser. However, unlike the Nissan Skyline, it’s likely that the Century would target Japan only.

Let’s Talk About the Ariya

With the Nissan Skyline still a rumor, if you’re looking for a new Nissan SUV at your Nissan dealer, the 2023 Nissan Ariya launched last fall with a starting price of $44,485. The Ariya is still a fairly new vehicle, having only debuted in 2020. However, it has only just recently launched in the United States. The FWD versions went on sale first, but the e4ORCE AWD versions should show up at Nissan dealers sometime in the spring of 2023.

There are quite a few Ariya trims available, with the highest one topping out at $61,485. This trim is the Platinum+ e-4ORCE and is still forthcoming for sale in the United States. FWD versions get up to 289 miles of range. The AWD versions have the most horsepower at 389.

If you can’t wait for the Skyline badge to become a reality, the Ariya is getting very good reviews on the EV crossover front.
