The Longest Argument in American Sports Cars

11.04.16 - Camaro vs Mustang

One of the longest rivalries that we’ve seen on the automotive market takes place between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. These two sports cars have being going head to head since the 1960s and have been argued over for several decades. There hasn’t been a clear winner in years and with these two cars going at it, there still might not be a clear victor over the other.

Both of these cars are pure American sports cars that have become more sophisticated over time and have all the technology and improvements you expect. When they’re set up in a similar fashion you can enjoy the benefit of shift management, active throttle response, a lighter weight through the use of aluminum in the frame and some absolute fun on the road or track.

With these two cars it’s hard to tell which one is actually better than the other, most likely you’d have to drive them to create a preference, but you should consider some numbers even before you step into either one of the cars. Using similar cars with manual transmissions and V8 engines allows you to enjoy seeing these two in similar fashion. The Mustang brings the lauded 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine to the mix which offers 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. The Camaro charges in with a much larger engine, a 6.2-liter V8, and a full 455 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque for you to enjoy.

The weight of the Camaro comes to you at 3,685 pounds while the Mustang shows up at 3,705 to give the Camaro, even with the larger engine a slight weight advantage over the Ford Mustang. Both cars have short throws in the manual shifter and have easy to enjoy setups inside from the driver’s seat.

If you’re looking for anything negative on either car, the Mustang is going to give you more play on the back end with a softer feel and one that will tail whip if you step on the gas too soon into a turn. Conversely, the Camaro allows you to enter turns more easily and is certainly a car that’s more planted and in control of the situation. The brakes of the Mustang give you one of the better control feelings that you can enjoy. You get to enjoy the harder bite to have much more control on the road and on the track.

The visibility out of the Mustang is much better than the Camaro, with only small and thin pillars and better overall comfort, but both cars are seriously enjoyable to drive. If you were to take a long road trip or have a car that you wanted to drive on a daily basis, the Mustang would make a better choice with a higher ride position and more visibility. Even with that said, there’s no denying the important of displacement when you want the brutal push that a car can offer, which gives the Camaro the edge once again.

While you enjoy this amazing video, you can decide which pony car is the one for you; I know which one I love, but this is a much more personal choice than you would originally think it could be.
