Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer - Power with Three Rows Compared

Let’s take a look at the Dodge Durango SRT and the Ford Explorer ST compared to each other to see what each one gives you for the drive.

The crossover SUV market has grown in popularity and has become one of the most competitive segments of the automotive market for several years. When you’re looking for a powerful three-row SUV that’s not listed as a full-size model, you’ve turned to the Dodge Durango SRT to be the model you want. With the new 2020 Ford Explorer entering the market this year, one variation of this SUV is ready to take on the Durango SRT and give it a serious run for its money.

Performance and Power

These two SUVs take different routes to create the power desired to make them powerful and ready to derive. The Ford Explorer ST is using a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine while the Dodge Durango SRT goes the route of using a massive 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine. The Durango has more power with 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque while the Explorer can be proud of the 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. Neither of these two SUVs is a slouch when it comes to the power you’ll enjoy on the road.

When you consider the performance of the drive, you have to think about the ratio of power and weight that you’ll find. The new Ford Explorer ST weighs in at 4,701 pounds which is a massive 809 pounds less than the Durango. Even so, this means you have a power-to-weight ratio that’s similar in both vehicles. The Durango shows in at 11.6 for this ratio and the Explorer gives you an 11.75 ratio for the drive. The lowered weight also plays a role in the handling and the control you can enjoy when you take the Explorer out for a drive.

Interior Space and Practicality

You might expect the Durango to be the larger when you look inside and look at the roominess you’ll have, but the Explorer ST has more of what you need. This Ford brings you more headroom, legroom, and shoulder room in every row except the third one. This is the only area where there isn’t much headroom in the Explorer. The cargo space offered is greater in the Explorer as well with a full cubic foot more of space and a total of a 2.7 cubic-foot advantage over the Durango when all the seats are down.

If you need to have the SUV you choose to be able to tow and haul a trailer, the Dodge Durango SRT is the right choice for you. The Ford Explorer is rated at 5,600 pounds but the Dodge has a much greater number at 8,700 pounds of towing capacity. This is the highest towing capacity in the Durango lineup and even the Durango R/T can tow more than the Explorer ST with a rating of 7,200 pounds for the Durango with the 5.7-liter V8 under the hood. You’ll have to decide which SUV makes the most sense for you.

More Items to Consider

Of course, you may need to consider the features, look, and style of the SUV that you want to drive. Another factor that may make sense for you will be the fuel mileage. The Ford Explorer ST should be more efficient than the Dodge Durango SRT by far. You’ll want to make the right choice for the drive that you’ll enjoy when it’s time to get behind the wheel and have the SUV you want to drive that fits the entire family. Take a look at these higher-powered models that can be the SUV you’ll want to enjoy on the road.
