Toyota Previews New Compact Crossover EV

Toyota Previews New Compact Crossover EV

It’s no secret that Toyota is one of the slowest automakers to enter the EV industry, which is somewhat ironic since the automaker is largely credited for launching the hybrid industry into the mainstream. Though it started with just the Prius, Toyota now has many hybrid offerings, including the popular Toyota Highlander. But it’s taking a back seat when it comes to all-electric models.

Toyota bZ4X Struggles With Rollout

Toyota recently debuted the bZ4X EV but has struggled with the rollout. EV models accounted for fewer than 1% of Toyota’s 5.8 million total car sales through July of this year. However, the automaker hopes it can turn things around with a new compact crossover EV. This smaller SUV might appeal to more consumers as the EV industry heats up.

Recently, Toyota has previewed various innovations to boost EV production and visibility as well as improve efficiency and cut costs. Toyota is now teasing a next-gen EV model. The bZ compact SUV was actually revealed last November as the model slated to sit below the bZ4X.

The Beyond Zero moniker is just getting started, according to Toyota’s vice president and GM. Toyota says that the bZ compact crossover EV showcases an aerodynamic design and intuitive tech features that have never been seen on a Toyota model.

Sneak Peek In Latest Video Teaser

Toyota recently released a new video teaser that offers a sneak peek at the upcoming bZ Concept. The video outlines the new compact crossover quite well. It has a car-like profile, similar to the Toyota Highlander, but it’s much more compact and features modern angles. The full-length lightbar across the rear stands out and when you zoom in, you can see the Z Compact SUV moniker on the license plate. Once the camera zooms in on the BEV badge near a blue circle, you realize it’s the same one that was on the November prototype.

Toyota adds a tagline in Japanese that translates to “This badge from the Prius conveys the message that we value the happiness of people living on earth and want to pass it on to the next generation.” This next-generation model is being positioned to achieve that goal.

Inside and Outside

Outside, Toyota’s upcoming compact crossover EV offers a futuristic look with sweeping angles, an aggressive wheel stance, and short overhangs. Inside, the EV focuses on tech, connectivity, and minimalism. There’s even an in-car agent named Yui that connects passengers to the vehicle.

Toyota hasn’t revealed any powertrain details yet but says that its next generation of EV models will be more efficient and be fitted with advanced batteries that are capable of nearly 500 miles of range. The current bZ4X offers nearly 252 miles of range and it starts at $42,000.

While we’re waiting for Toyota to upgrade its EV game and fill out the lineup, there are plenty of Toyota hybrid models to choose from, including the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, the Camry Hybrid, the Prius Hybrid, and the RAV4 Hybrid.
