Can’t Afford a Cadillac; Just Wait

05.13.16 - Cadillac Logo

There always seems to be something new on the horizon that is meant to intrigue us in some way. When we see the exceptional quality and style of Cadillac vehicles many of us would love to be able to drive one new, but can’t afford it as part of our monthly budget. The reality is the Cadillac name is synonymous with a higher end of luxury than most and with a lineup of luxury cars that are typically larger than the entry level models from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz most of us have to wait for a used Cadillac or purchase a different brand.

News has recently been released that it appears there might be an entry level Cadillac on the horizon. While we haven’t seen any prototypes, having had one at a car show as a concept, and have not even heard a new name yet, the programming code in the Delta design platform suggests to us that we will have this smaller Caddy eventually. The thought is an entry level Cadillac would be a great fit to go against the Mercedes-Benz CLA and would certainly capture more sales in America than the Mercedes model does now.

How do we know there is a Cadillac of this size in the works? The Delta platform is the one that the Chevrolet Cruze is built on. This platform has internal code that reads D2JL. For those in the know you just got excited right away, but to translate this the D means Delta, the 2 indicates the generation number the J signifies a hatchback and the L translates to Cadillac. This and the fact that General Motors has been adding significant time and effort into refining this platform let us know we will see this car on the market soon to be a great entry level luxury car for us to enjoy.

What makes me think this car will be affordable? Currently the Cruze asks for a base price of $17,495 and the new from GM is that adding the Cadillac name to the vehicle will give a premium of between $6,000 and $9,000. This keeps the Cadillac at a starting price of less than $30,000 making it affordable on nearly every budget and the size that makes it easy to drive, and with the right Cadillac features, extremely luxurious and fun on any road.

Will this be a hatchback car? It’s hard to say since we haven’t seen a model yet, but the thought is it may be more of a liftback style like the new Volt. The idea is to put a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine in the base models and a 2.0-liter turbo on the higher models to give us the propulsion we want. Both of these engines are expected to be attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission to ensure you can enjoy the smooth shifting you want to have in a car that will be the affordable Cadillac you have always wanted to buy.
