The New GMC Canyon is Balanced and Comfortable

The 2024 GMC Canyon pickup truck is easy to live with, whether you’re using it as a daily driver or taking it on weekend adventures off-road. The exterior styling stands out from the crowd and the AT4X off-road trims appeal to the outdoors set. Like the GMC Terrain and other GMC models, the GMC Canyon offers a luxurious Denali trim at the top of the lineup.

Excellent Midsize Pickup

With the new generation, the GMC Canyon does a better job of being its own unique truck versus the Chevrolet Colorado. The new styling is the first place where this difference is obvious. GMC offers various trims for the Canyon, including the upscale Denali trim and the rugged AT4 trim.

The GMC Canyon AT4X is basically equivalent to the Colorado ZR2, but you can go even more extreme with the AT4X AEV Edition. Another difference from the Colorado is that the Canyon offers the highest-output turbo-four in every trim level.

The main downside to the 2024 GMC Canyon is its higher price compared to rivals. But the higher price tag does get you a long list of features and plenty of capability. The Canyon is an overall better choice than the Ford Ranger and the Nissan Frontier.

Not Much New For 2024

The Canyon started a new generation for the 2023 model year and was fully redesigned, so there isn’t much new for 2024. One big addition is the new AT4X AEV Edition model, which adds even more off-road performance and upgrades over the already very capable AT4X trim. Another addition is that the 11-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard for all trims.

It’s no secret that the Canyon is very similar to its stablemate, the Chevy Colorado, but plenty of differences justify the Canyon’s higher price tag. The Denali and AT4X trims are more set apart than other trims. The former offers fancy leather and artistic stitching in its upholstery, and the latter features sporty red accents paired with high-quality leather.

Power and Performance

As previously mentioned, a big difference between the Canyon and Colorado is that the Canyon offers the most powerful version of the 2.7-liter turbo-four on every trim. The Colorado has a few different engine outputs, with lower output engines on lower trims. The Canyon also has standard 4WD on every trim except the Elevation.

Compared to an SUV like the GMC Terrain, the rear seat of the Canyon feels a little cramped. However, the front row is spacious with a commanding view of the road. The Canyon features a new tailgate design called the MultiStow Tailgate. A shallow storage bin is integrated into the inside of the tailgate for stowing small items.

The 2024 GMC Canyon’s driving experience largely depends on whether you’re driving the AT4X trim or not. The AT4X has a beefed-up suspension with high-tech Multimatic dampers that absorb large bumps and make for a cushy ride on any surface.

Ultimately, the GMC Canyon is an excellent choice in the midsize pickup category, especially for those who want a truck that is both capable and comfortable.
