Mazda is planning to replace the CX-3 with a sleeker subcompact crossover that also provides more interior space. The Mazda CX-20 will use an electrified platform with mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine options. An upscale interior is expected with advanced tech and more room versus the outgoing CX-3.
The Subcompact CX-3 Finally Says Farewell
After over ten years of occupying the entry-level spot in the Mazda lineup, the small CX-3 is on its way out. According to various hints from company executives and trademark filings, the new model is likely to be called the CX-20. The new model is already deep in development and will slot beneath the CX-30 in the Mazda lineup.
A recent event saw Mazda executives giving hints on what’s next for the entry-level model. It might be some time yet before we see the final product, but there are a few things we know about the CX-20.
To start, the early design sketches show a subcompact crossover with an evolved Kodo design language. This styling is already visible on the larger SUVs in the lineup. It features clean lines and a sporty, lowered stance. The front end is mildly aggressive with slim headlights and a stack of daytime running lights.
Coupe-Like Roofline Stands Out
The CX-3 will become a used SUV by next year. Mazda plans to discontinue the subcompact crossover in September 2025. The CX-20 doesn’t have many confirmed details, but for now, we only have digital sketches to examine. Sometimes sketches are exaggerated, but it looks like the CX-20 will stand out with its coupe-like sloping roofline. Concept drawings seem to show a contrasting black roof and circular tail lights.
Even though there’s nothing to show the CX-20’s interior yet, it’s expected to be more premium and packed with tech compared to the CX-3. It’s likely to feature plenty of quality materials and a sleek design. The interior space is also expected to be better than the CX-3. The latter model was often criticized for its tight rear seats and small cargo hold.
There are strong hints that the CX-20 will use a hybrid platform with an inline-four engine. The engine is likely to be a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter size. Like the CX-3, the CX-20 will feature FWD as the standard layout with a possible AWD option.
Challenging a Competitive Segment
It’s no secret that the subcompact crossover segment is one of the most competitive in the industry. The CX-20 will challenge rivals from Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Toyota, and Ford. Mazda hasn’t confirmed a debut date for the CX-20, but more details will likely be revealed in the next year or so.
The new model will mostly target the Asian market, but it might come to other regions later. It’s difficult to say whether the CX-20 will eventually end up in the US market. This will mainly depend on demand and how competitive the segment is in the next few years.
Four Mazda models will be discontinued in all markets by the end of 2025. This includes the CX-3, the Mazda 6 sedan, the fully electric MX-30, and the Mazda 2 supermini.
