Ford’s $30,000 Electric Pickup Steps Into the Spotlight

Ford has finally given us something to look at. After months of talk about a low-cost electric truck, CEO Jim Farley shared a few candid images on LinkedIn that offer the first real peek at the brand’s upcoming compact EV pickup, a $30,000 model riding on a fresh architecture and aiming squarely at mainstream buyers.

A Quiet Reveal With Loud Implications

The teaser wasn’t tied to a flashy press event. Farley posted the images to celebrate Doug Field’s last day with the company, and one of the photos shows Field speaking about the new truck with Farley and other Ford executives, including a small glimpse of the EV’s bed. It’s a low-key way to drop a first look at what could be one of the most important vehicles Ford has launched in years.

Ford has been hinting at this truck for a while, but the project picked up speed last summer. The automaker says the “Model T moment” of the electric vehicle era is here, with a $30,000 midsize electric pickup that’s part of a family of next-generation EVs riding on what Ford calls the Universal EV Platform, built using the Ford Universal EV Production System.

The Universal EV Platform, Simplified

The headline number is the price, but the engineering story is what makes that price possible. The $30,000 pickup will sit on the new Universal EV platform, developed in-house by a skunkworks team, and the same architecture will support several other vehicles, including SUVs and vans.

Ford is cutting fat everywhere it can. According to the company, the platform has 20 percent fewer parts, 25 percent fewer fasteners, and requires 40 percent fewer plant workstations than an ordinary platform. A new unicasting process, similar to Tesla’s gigacasting, uses large single-piece aluminum castings to bring costs down. Farley said the simplified aluminum unicastings condense more than 146 parts into two, which speeds up production.

Wiring is another big win. Ford is using a zonal architecture for its new EV platform, cutting 1.3 kilometers, or more than 4,000 feet, of wiring harnesses compared with the Mustang Mach-E. Less wiring means lighter weight, fewer failure points, and faster assembly.

Could the Ranchero Name Come Back?

Ford hasn’t confirmed a name yet, but the rumor mill is loud. Key specs are still under wraps, though we know the pickup will use lithium iron phosphate batteries. It may also revive the Ranchero nameplate, which Ford hasn’t used since 1979. On August 5, 2025, Ford applied to trademark Ranchero for “motor vehicles, namely trucks, vans, utility vehicles, and electric cars,” pointing to the name as a contender for this midsize EV.

The original Ranchero was a car-based pickup that competed with the Chevy El Camino. Reviving the badge for a modern EV would tie the project to Ford history while keeping it separate from the F-150 Lightning lineup. Anyone scanning their local dealer lot for a new truck for sale won’t see it on the ground for a while, but the badge could resurface well before launch on official renderings.

How It Drives and Where It Fits

This isn’t a stripped-out econo-box. Farley said it’s “very fast,” adding that “it’s rear-wheel drive, it’s super fun to drive, and it has a digital experience that no one’s seen.” Ford is aiming for a 0 to 60 mph time as quick as the Mustang EcoBoost, which is around 4.5 seconds.

Packaging is clever, too. Ford said the new pickup would offer the interior space of a midsize truck while fitting inside the footprint of the compact Maverick, thanks to an electric powertrain that uses a lot less space than a traditional gas setup. Structural batteries under the floor leave room for a bed and a frunk.

Pricing-wise, the math is hard to argue with. The truck has no direct EV competitors right now, and if Ford hits that $30,000 target, it would undercut most gas-powered midsize pickups too. The Toyota Tacoma starts at $33,185 and the Chevrolet Colorado at $33,595.

What Comes Next for Ford’s Cheap EV Truck

Ford is putting real money behind this push. The company is investing $5 billion in its new EV platform, including nearly $2 billion for the Louisville plant where the truck will be assembled, plus $3 billion in the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, which will make the LFP batteries for the vehicle. Production kicks off in 2027 at the Louisville Assembly Complex, with deliveries starting the same year.

The LinkedIn teaser is small in the grand scheme, but it signals that the project is on track. If the engineering pays off, Ford could end up with the kind of approachable electric pickup the U.S. market has been waiting for.
