The Genesis Brand is Off to a Great Start

06.30.16 - 2017 Genesis G80

It’s that time and it’s an exciting time. We finally get what Hyundai has promised us for the past several months, a new luxury brand that will now be known as the Genesis brand and replace the Genesis car entirely. The reason we now have this brand is because the Genesis was popular and one of the most impressive cars for several years, which now will be the perfect name for the brand that will be the first Korean luxury arm we have seen on our market. So, what did Genesis bring us to enjoy?

First off is the G80 sedan, which is exactly what we expected and has been the promised vehicle from the name over the past several months. The G80 is the new name for what used to be the Hyundai Genesis and it made its debut at the Busan Motor Show. This new version of a car we have loved for years has a more refined front end and a new set of headlights. Even though this doesn’t seem like much of a change, the idea is to have a few way to separate the brand from the parent company without a complete overhaul in style changes.

While the G80 was the expected model to show up at the show the big news was the fact this car had a stablemate already, the G80 Sport, which also made its debut. The G80 Sport will be powered by a 3.3-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine that will produces 365 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque. The overall look of this vehicle will be sportier with upgraded bumpers, a quad exhaust setup and a mesh grill. Both models of the G80 will use the same eight-speed automatic transmission and the standard G80 model will be powered by the 3.8-liter V6 engine that pumps out 311 horsepower and 293 lb.-ft. of torque.

Of course, just like any good sports luxury car should, the G80 Sport will offer an upgraded engine that will give you an even more exciting ride and the power you truly desire. This engine will be a 5.0-liter V8 that pushed 420 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. To go along with the engine upgrade you can take advantage of a wide variety of luxury features that will make this car the best one you have ever driven on any road.

Another expectation from the new Genesis brand is that it will continue to have a similar philosophy as the parent company. Hyundai has long been known for filling their cars with great features and added benefits while keeping the overall price of the vehicles low. If Genesis is able to do this as well we will see a new brand be the price buster in the luxury market and Lexus will have to make some serious adjustments to keep up as will many of the other luxury brands. This type of competition may not be great for the luxury automakers, but it’s perfect for us as consumers.

Genesis has already promised to have six new models by 2020 and has already announced a G90 as the next model that will be offered in 2017. With that model will have three of the six and still have three years to go, putting Genesis well ahead of its targeted goal. The next question we should ask is whether or not any of these six models will be luxury SUVs or two door roadsters. If they were, Genesis certainly would be in a position of direct competition with many of the other already well-known luxury names.
